Even if you do not watch the news, you may have heard about Fox9’s Meteorologist Ian Leonard. I have always enjoyed his enthusiasm for providing the weather forecast, but what I didn’t know is his passion for life and everything he does. I had the opportunity to meet Ian at a Minnesota Hospital Association meeting last week. Ian presented on living with passion and purpose. He shared his story about sustaining a concussion while playing soccer and battling skin cancer. He began his triathlon journey after his battle with cancer and has completed over five full Ironman competitions (a 2.2-mile swim, a 112-mile bike, and a full marathon). Immediately, that fact alone drew me in. However, it wasn’t until he shared his passion for raising $$ for the Special Olympics that I knew we were kindred spirits. He has raised over $28 million for the organization and participated in over 400 polar plunges.
Many of you know that my oldest daughter is a special Olympic athlete, and the games mean so much to her and the other athletes. There is nothing like seeing the smiles after they complete their event and the level of confidence these athletes gain, whether they win or lose. Being the guy that Ian is, when I shared with him the impact his message had on me and that my daughter was a huge fan of his, he offered to create a short video message for my daughter. This gift was priceless, along with his message…..Live with purpose and passion. We all can do this just by doing or saying something that makes another person’s day. Ian did that for my daughter and I. He also invests his time in raising funds for a great cause. We at JMHS also appreciate so many that donate their time and gifts to make our organization better. Let’s all make a choice to live with purpose and passion despite whatever storm may come our way.
