The work of America’s nurses to save lives and to maintain the health of millions of individuals is celebrated annually May 6-12 throughout the United States. This year, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has selected “Nurses: Advocating, Leading, Caring” as the theme for 2012.
Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers.
Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. From healthcare facilities including hospitals, clinics, home health and long-term care to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
