JMHS Hosts Advanced Emergency Training for Rural Providers
Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS) recently hosted a Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) training course on May 28 and 29. The two-day hands-on emergency preparedness instruction, tailored specifically for rural healthcare settings, was attended by 11 JMHS staff members and 16 additional participants from surrounding healthcare facilities.
CALS is a nationally recognized certification that equips clinicians with critical skills to manage life-threatening emergencies in low-resource environments. The course combines trauma, cardiac, obstetric, and pediatric emergency care into one integrated curriculum, with a focus on real-world scenarios in a rural hospital.
“CALS is one of the most relevant and practical pieces of training we can offer our clinical teams,” said Brooke Kockelman, Education Coordinator at JMHS. “This designation ensures that rural providers are prepared to respond quickly and effectively when seconds matter. It’s a vital part of maintaining readiness and delivering high-quality emergency care in our region.”
In addition to sharpening clinical skills, the training promoted collaboration among professionals from various organizations. “It was wonderful to welcome new faces to our campus and be part of this shared learning experience,” Kockelman added.
