Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS) is pleased to announce the successful completion of a new gardening project for Assisted Living residents, made possible by funding from the Countryside Public Health Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP).
The grant funded the purchase of two 60-inch raised-bed planters from By the Yard, creating an accessible, engaging gardening space for residents of the JMHS Assisted Living community. The elevated design allows residents with varying mobility levels to comfortably participate in planting, tending, and harvesting flowers and vegetables throughout the growing season.
To complete the project, flowers, vegetables, and soil were purchased from Heather’s Floral & Nursery in Dawson, supporting a local business and providing residents with a variety of colorful blooms and fresh produce to enjoy.
The gardening project was designed to promote healthy eating, physical activity, social engagement, and overall well-being among residents. By participating in gardening activities, residents have opportunities to stay active, connect with one another, share gardening experiences, and enjoy the satisfaction of nurturing plants from planting through harvest.
This project offers much more than beautiful flowers and fresh vegetables. The raised garden beds offer residents opportunities to stay active, socialize, and enjoy meaningful outdoor activities. Johnson Memorial Health Services is grateful to Countryside Public Health for supporting this initiative and for helping us enhance the quality of life for our Assisted Living residents.
Funding for the project was provided through the Countryside Public Health SHIP program, which supports initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles through environmental and community improvements. The grant aligns with SHIP’s mission to expand access to healthy foods and create opportunities for physical activity where people live, learn, work, and play.
Johnson Memorial Health Services extends its sincere appreciation to Countryside Public Health SHIP for its generous support and to Heather’s Floral & Nursery for helping bring the project to life. Together, these partnerships are helping create a healthier, more vibrant environment for Assisted Living residents in Dawson.
