What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease in which the body is either unable to produce enough insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it does make. This dysfunction can lead to elevated blood sugars and increased risk of long-term complications. Education, lifestyle changes, monitoring and treatment, support optimal management.

What are the First Signs of Diabetes?

Early signs may include changes in vision, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased thirst and hunger, and fatigue. Early recognition and management may help reduce complications and improve long-term outcomes.

How Does Type 1 Differ from Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 1: Autoimmune condition where insulin-producing cells are destroyed or quit functioning, requiring lifelong insulin.

Type 2: Most common type of diabetes; occurs when the body becomes resistant to your own insulin or there is a reduction in amount of insulin the pancreas produces.

Both require ongoing management to reduce complications.

Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes

Risk factors include, family history of type 2 diabetes, sedentary lifestyle,  elevated body mass index (overweight/obesity), history of gestational diabetes, unhealthy eating habits, hypertension and age over 45.  Awareness of risk factors coupled with early screening supports prevention and potential progression.

Learning Objectives
  • Measure and adjust blood sugar levels as needed
  • Consider use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)
  • Consider use of smart tools which may make insulin therapy easier
  • Use wearable insulin pump technology as able
  • Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle
  • Support healthy pregnancy goals if diagnosed with gestational diabetes
  • Prevent progression from prediabetes to Type 2 diabetes
