JMHS Secures Grant for CPR Training Equipment and Expands Opportunities to the Community

Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS) has received a $4,000 grant from the Southwest Initiative Foundation and Dawson Community Foundation, supplemented with an additional $1,000 contribution from JMHS. The funds purchased six adult and five infant CPR manikins equipped with AED training devices, significantly enhancing the facility’s training capabilities. The new manikins and AED training devices provide realistic, hands-on instruction to improve emergency preparedness and life-saving response skills for JMHS staff and the broader community.  The first training class utilizing the new manikins was held on Monday, June 16, 2025.

“This grant is vital for our facility’s staff training and future community CPR classes,” said Brooke Kockelman, JMHS Education Coordinator. “These life-saving tools enhance emergency preparedness and response for our staff and community.”

As part of JMHS’s ongoing commitment to community health education, Kockelman recently led a CPR class for a local business in Dawson.  Based on interest and need, additional community classes may be offered. While no other public CPR classes are currently scheduled, JMHS continues to explore opportunities to expand educational outreach.

Kockelman is also participating in the upcoming JMHS Healthcare Summer Camp, scheduled for July 23, 2025. The camp is open to students currently in grades 10–12 and provides a unique, behind-the-scenes look into the world of healthcare.  Students will engage in hands-on activities, including CPR training, first aid practice, and anatomy exploration, and have the opportunity to connect with medical professionals.  Camp participants will also be eligible for a chance to win one of eight college scholarships.  Kockelman will lead the CPR training session using the newly acquired manikins.

The new equipment enables JMHS to continue enhancing patient safety, strengthening staff readiness, and expanding community access to critical, life-saving education.
