Welcome to Medicare Visit
A Healthy Start to Your Medicare Journey
To help you get the most out of your coverage and ensure you’re on the path to good health, Medicare offers a one-time “Welcome to Medicare” visit. This visit is an important first step in establishing a personalized preventive care plan and must be completed within the first 12 months of enrolling in Medicare Part B.
What is the “Welcome to Medicare” Visit?
This is a preventive health visit, not a complete physical exam. Think of it as a health check-in to assess your current well-being and identify potential health risks. During this visit, your provider will:
- Review Your Medical and Social History: We’ll discuss your past health, medications, and family history to get a complete picture of your health.
- Take Basic Measurements: We’ll check your height, weight, blood pressure, and BMI.
- Conduct Screenings and Assessments: This may include a depression screening and an assessment of your functional abilities and safety.
- Provide Preventive Counseling: We’ll discuss healthy lifestyle choices, recommended screenings, and vaccinations.
- Create a Personalized Preventive Care Plan: You’ll receive a written plan outlining the preventive services that are right for you.
- Offer the opportunity to discuss advance directives.
What to Bring to Your Visit:
To make the most of your visit, please bring:
- A complete list of all your medications (prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and supplements).
- Your medical and immunization records.
- Your family health history.
- A list of any questions or concerns you have.
Coverage and Costs:
- The “Welcome to Medicare” visit is generally covered by Medicare Part B.
- Please be aware that additional tests or services may result in separate charges.
- If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, please verify coverage details with your insurance provider.
