The 22nd Annual Dr. Maus Dawson-Boyd Community Golf Scholarship Tournament is Friday, August 4 at the Dawson Golf Course. The mixed three-person best ball tournament provides a number of opportunities for participants to win prizes. There are prizes at each hole and a drawing for various prizes for participants at the completion of the tournament. The cost to participate is $30 for adults and $25 for those under 18; meal is included.
The money raised from registration fees, sponsorships, and donations go towards the Dr. Maus Dawson-Boyd Community Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is awarded annually to Dawson-Boyd graduates pursuing careers in healthcare. Proceeds from this Fund have provided over $57,000 in Scholarships to DBHS Students & Alumni.
“The hope is that our youth will realize the healthcare field has a number of rewarding opportunities,” said Dr. Maus. “This scholarship is to encourage them in achieving the education needed for one of these careers. Then, what we would like to see is they consider returning to Dawson or another rural community.”
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis for rural healthcare facilities to grow their own workforce. The national healthcare labor shortages have made it increasingly difficult for rural facilities to compete. Since rural communities have a large population of aging adults the healthcare industry is projected to grow by 31.5% through 2020, while all industries are projected to grow only 10.4%.
While the scholarship is named in his honor, Dr. Maus would like to see everyone take ownership of it. As well as the goal of making sure that healthcare professionals are available in Dawson to continue to provide vital medical services in the future.
This year $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Kaitlin Wold, Nursing; Sadie Thompson, Nursing; Eli Weber, Pre-Medicine; Kaitlyn Willander, Nursing; and Sydney Giese, Physical Therapy.
