JMHS and Dawson-Boyd Schools Team Up for Youth Throwing Clinic
Young athletes in grades 3-6 recently had the opportunity to sharpen their baseball and softball skills and learn proper throwing mechanics at a throwing clinic. This was a collaborative effort between Johnson Memorial Health Services (JMHS) and the Dawson-Boyd Schools. Led by Rachel Hakanson, a Physical Therapist at JMHS, the clinic focused on injury prevention and enhancing performance.
Thirty boys and girls participated in the program, which broke down the overhead throwing motion into key “check points”. This approach ensured that each young athlete understood an
d executed the correct form at every vital stage of the throwing process. “Proper throwing is incredibly important, not just for improving speed and accuracy, but also to prevent injuries,” noted Rachel Hakanson.
The clinic also emphasized the importance of utilizing the entire body, particularly the core and legs, rather than relying solely on arm strength. This approach to throwing helps to distribute the force more effectively, reducing strain on the arm and promoting overall athletic development.
JMHS is dedicated to the community’s health. Their partnership with Dawson-Boyd Schools and initiatives like the Throwing Clinic show their commitment to proactive care and healthy habits.
